Professional camera operator Jonathan Young has been using
JVC’s GY-HD101 (european version of the GY-HD100) camcorder
on both HD and SD shooting assignments. These have taken him all over
the
world, often in war zones, as can be seen from his company website
http://www.debrouillard.tv. When first hearing about JVC’s
GY-HD101 camcorder, Jonathan was relieved that someone had created a
camcorder that suited professional cameramen. "At
last, a small DV camcorder with features and performance normally only
found on much larger broadcast cameras. I knew that as soon as I got my
hands on a HD101, it would join my list of preferred cameras."
"The Holy Grail had arrived, the GY-HD101 from JVC. After struggling
with an electronic approximation of focus on other DV cameras, I now
had a lens that I could focus and, most importantly, be sure that what
I was shooting was in focus. Using the JVC / Fujinon traditional style
lens meant that the markings on the focus barrel were accurate in
relation to what I was shooting at the time. Furthermore, having a real
mechanical iris gave me great reassurance about the ability to measure
and control exposure accurately."
With the recent introduction of the 2/3" to 1/3" bayonet lens adaptor
for the GY-HD100, professional camera operators can now utilize their
existing 2/3" lenses. The adaptors provide the option of using a high
definition 22x lens, or wide angle lens, or a variety of standard
definition lenses on a small DV camcorder. "In my opinion, the range of
creative and technical opportunities that this development brings will
move this camcorder to the top of most cameramen’s shopping
list."
