CAROLINA PICTURES ACHIEVES ASTOUNDING COLOR CLARITY AND DETAIL WITH JVC's DIGITAL-S

Educational Program on PBS Affiliate Attains New Heights in Picture Quality with JVC

Elmwood Park, NJ (February 3, 1998) – Carolina Pictures, the maker of an educational nature series broadcast on South Carolina's Educational Television Network (PBS affiliate WLRK), has selected JVC's DIGITAL-S with 4:2:2 component digital as its recording format.

Based in Hilton Head, SC, Carolina Pictures is owned by Tom Jenkins, a documentary producer and filmmaker who writes, shoots and edits his own educational program entitled, "Our World." The half-hour series about forests located in the Southern United States and the scientific work being done in them, is broadcast monthly on South Carolina's Educational Television and aired on local Channel 35.

Recently, Jenkins made the move to digital by purchasing JVC's DIGITAL-S BR-D40 Dockable Recorder and JVC's KY-D29 digital signal processing camera. This package allows Jenkins to obtain breathtaking clarity and detail when shooting tree canopies during his deep forest treks across the Southern United States.

Jenkins said DIGITAL-S rises to the many and varied lighting challenges he experiences when he is shooting in the swampy forests of the South. "DIGITAL-S reproduces the high contrast and finest detail of such difficult sights as bald cypress tree canopies for our viewers," commented Jenkins.

"When we are shooting extremely deep in the forest, we have to contend with a thick tree canopy overhead. It is probably the hardest thing to shoot, or to accurately reproduce because it is thousands and thousands of leaves mixed in with sunlight. I have shot with a variety of different formats and have been very frustrated because they couldn't hold all that detail, but DIGITAL-S really handles it beautifully," Jenkins said. "DIGITAL-S can capture the hottest part of the screen as well as the darkest part of the screen and keep them in exposure."

Jenkins, who used to shoot with JVC's KY-17 Professional Camera, said reliability was also a factor when he upgraded to DIGITAL-S. Because of his prior positive experience with JVC, Jenkins said, "I knew that DIGITAL-S would be a solid workhorse that I could rely on, especially when shooting alone in a desolate forest."

Finally, Jenkins said he must have broadcast quality tape, and DIGITAL-S is a better quality than most of the tape aired on the station. "If you look at the competition," Jenkins said, "they are not in the same ballpark as DIGITAL-S."
