OREGON FACILITY SELECTS JVC'S DIGITAL-S
Elmwood Park, NJ (November 13, 1997) Photo & Video Services, an independent photo and video
service which holds contracts with the state of Oregon, has selected JVC's DIGITAL-S as its primary
tape format.
The service, based in Salem, Ore., recently used JVC's DIGITAL-S BR-D40 dockable field recorder
in conjunction with JVC's KY-D29 camera to shoot the rebuilding of a section of the I-5 Bridge
by the Oregon State Department of Transportation, under extreme low-light conditions. Footage
of the bridge rebuilding, which was aired on a local WABC-affiliate, showed iron workers,
illuminated only by flashlight, working on the I-5 span that connects Oregon and Washington.
The span was old and in need of repairs.
"Docking our KY-D29 with the BR-D40 has allowed us
to get high-end broadcast quality at a competitive price," said Producer/Director Ted Burney.
Burney also had high praise for JVC's BR-D50 DIGITAL-S Player and the BR-D80 DIGITAL-S Editor
that provided him with the superb benefit of DIGITAL-S 4:2:2 resolution and perceptually lossless
compression.
"A good reason to go with the 4:2:2 component digital system, is that we don't get the artifacts
that occur from the DV's 4:1:1 system," Burney said.
The facility's new equipment was purchased in July from Professional Video & Tape of Portland,
Ore.
"DIGITAL-S is true 4:2:2 component digital and not 4:1:1. We thought it would interface well
with the acquisition of a nonlinear system and we also like the standard, larger tape format,"
Burney said. "It's opening up new avenues for us in post-production."
Not only has DIGITAL-S produced outstanding picture quality for Burney, it has proven to be
durable in the field, where Burney often shoots footage at night under changing weather conditions.
"Its performing beyond our expectations," Burney said.
