Leading Microwave Transmission Manufacturers Add HD Capabilities with JVC’s Affordable DM-JV600 Encoder

WAYNE, NJ (July 30, 2004) -- JVC PROFESSIONAL PRODUCTS COMPANY is pleased to announce the addition of Nucomm, Inc. and Broadcast Microwave Services, Inc.(BMS) to its HD Products program. As leading manufacturers of microwave transmission equipment, NuComm and BMS will offer the broadcast industry the first turnkey solutions for microwave HDTV remote broadcasts by incorporating JVC’s revolutionary and cost-effective DM-JV600 high definition (HD) MPEG-2 encoder with their products.

“The addition of BMS and Nucomm and to our HD Products program enables JVC to start providing cost-effective HDTV encoding solutions to broadcasters interested in utilizing HDTV microwave remotes for ENG/EFP operations, ” said Lawrence Librach, assistant vice president Business Development Broadcast & Entertainment for JVC PROFESSIONAL PRODUCTS COMPANY. “It also expands our product reach in segments of the country and around the world where there are no designated JVC HD Products territorial representatives.”

With the powerful DM-JV600 encoder as part of a Nucomm or BMS microwave transmission solution, JVC has made it practical for broadcasters and news outlets to perform live, remote-HD broadcasts. Incorporating advanced MPEG-2 encoding technologies exclusive to JVC, the DM-JV600 is a multi-format 4:2:0/4:2:2 HDTV encoder with Dolby audio pass-through that offers proven compatibility with multiple microwave radio systems — both analog and digital. The DM-JV600 encoder accepts SMPTE-292M HD-SDI signals and encodes them into HD MPEG-2 format and provides a transport stream (TS) through its 2 DVB-ASI interfaces. The DM-JV600U is the world’s first $25,000 HDTV encoder appropriate for cost-effective HD electronic news gathering (ENG) and electronic field production (EFP) as well as satellite backhaul and contribution, giving broadcasters the ability to capture and transmit HDTV content from across the street or around the world.

Solutions for Digital and Analog Microwave Radios

At NAB 2004, BMS teamed up with JVC for a successful digital HD demonstration. JVC’s HD video was transmitted through BMS’ Carry-Coder II (Digital COFDM 4:2:0/4:2:2 low delay transmitter) to BMS’ booth where attendees could view the HD signal on an HD monitor.

“It’s an honor for BMS to be affiliated with such a progressive player as JVC in the broadcast industry,” said Graham Bunney, president and general manager of BMS,  “Together with JVC, BMS intends to lead the way in meeting the imminent demand for high quality HD processing and broadcast systems.”

Nucomm of Hackettstown, NJ, was the first manufacturer to provide digital transmission on an analog microwave radio, successfully demonstrating the capability of transmitting HD images over an analog link using their Analog Coder and the JVC DM-JV600. Nucomm has provided HDTV transmission for years over digital STL systems.

“Our demonstration at the Michigan Association of Broadcasters (MAB) show in March firmly established our relationship with JVC as we saw the opportunity that the DM-JV600 would add to our solutions offering,” explained Dr. John Payne, Sr., president of Nucomm. “The combination of products lets us capitalize on the proliferation of conventional analog microwave radios that are in the field now. Without having to upgrade to digital microwaves, we can offer a powerful, affordable and true HD solution.”
