NAB 2012 Positioning Statement
JVC: ON AIR. ON TIME. ON BUDGET.

LAS VEGAS, NV (NAB 2012) – It did not take JVC Professional Products Company very long to capture the number one market position in broadcast HD studio camera and monitor sales. And we have kept our leadership role because we remain focused on the needs of broadcasters. There is no single camcorder or monitor that meets the needs of every video professional. That’s why JVC’s ProHD line continues to deliver innovative families of products with wide ranging capabilities.

We also remain true our ProHD vision. JVC delivers products that deliver -- outstanding picture quality, excellent features, durability in the field, world-class support – at a cost-effective price point and utilizing inexpensive, non-proprietary recording media. Other manufacturers may be introducing one-chip camera models, but broadcasters prefer three-chip cameras, which offer better dynamic range and generally better resolution. That’s why all ProHD models designed for broadcast news feature 3-CCD or 3-CMOS imagers. Plus, while we continue to add new features like AVCHD recording to new models, JVC has maintained our proven MPEG-2 workflow throughout the ProHD product line, which provides a level of consistency that is important to broadcasters.

Over the past 12 months, JVC has introduced a number of new products, but we are most excited about two additions to the ProHD lineup that are being introduced at the 2012 NAB Show. The GY-HM600 next-generation handheld camera delivers innovation without compromise. It features a built-in wide angle 23x autofocus zoom lens and superior low-light performance in a comfortable form factor that’s designed for the run-and-gun workflow of today’s broadcast professional. It’s equipped with three, 1/3-inch CMOS sensors, auto-focus with face detection, optical image stabilizer, and manual focus, zoom, and iris rings. It also has a Pre Rec (retro cache) feature that continuously records and stores up to 20 seconds of footage in cache memory to help prevent missed shots of breaking news. Like previous models, it records native .MOV and .MP4 file formats, but the GY-HM600 also records AVCHD for even more versatility.

And the introduction of our new GY-HM650 marks the beginning of a new era of mobile newsgathering. With a similar body style and features to the GY-HM600, the GY-HM650 mobile news camera can produce a full HD file on one memory card while simultaneously creating a smaller, Web-friendly file on a second card. Then, with built-in FTP and Wi-Fi connectivity, the camera can transfer the footage back to the station without a microwave or satellite connection. The GY-HM650 is not designed to replace microwave or satellite trucks, but it does augment a station’s resources and provides an inexpensive way to get video shot just moments earlier back to the station – and on the air – using just the technology built into the camera.

The GY-HM650 also records .MXF files, and JVC has announced its intent to support the Advanced Media Workflow Association (AMWA) “AS-10: MXF for Production” project, designed to establish a common .MXF file format for a typical end-to-end production workflow, with the new camcorder. The project. AS-10 compliant equipment and software preserve image quality and metadata, both of which are critical for automated asset management solutions.

We also continue to improve existing product categories. The new GY-HM150, for example, is JVC’s most advanced compact handheld camcorder. Based on the solid ergonomic designed of the popular GY-HM100, which is used by thousands of photojournalists at major media outlets around the world, the GY-HM150 has a new encoder and digital signal processor that deliver improved HD recording, as well as support for SD. Other improvements include Pre Rec, time-lapse (interval) recording, and simultaneous recording to both media cards, support for SDHC and SDXC media cards, and more intuitive manual controls.

Earlier this year, we introduced expanded functionality for our GY-HM150 for a studio environment using two new accessories, the HZ-HM150VZR ProHD remote lens control and the DT-X71 portable seven-inch AC/DC ProHD monitor. Designed by VariZoom, the new HZ-HM150VZR plugs into the camcorder’s 3.5mm remote connector to provide professional-style zoom control, focus and iris adjustment, and start/stop operation. (It is also ideal for camcorders mounted to a jib, crane, or boom.) When mounted to a camcorder, any one of the three models of the DT-X71 Series serves as a full-size studio camera monitor.

Beyond cameras, JVC remains a leader in flat-panel displays, and is continuing to break new ground with its expanding product lines that deliver everything from high-end reference level to affordable portable monitors. We recently launched the cost-effective E Series professional LCD monitors, our first with mercury-free LED backlighting that consumes less power than LCDs that use conventional CCFL-driven lighting. The new DT-E21L4 21-inch and DT-E17L4G 17-inch models deliver full HD resolution with a 1920x1080 TN panel. Both displays offer 10-bit color processing, in-monitor display, 16-channel embedded audio with level indicator, and a variety of inputs. Plus, both monitors are light enough for field use and include a DC power input connector.

The latest addition to our high-end Vérité G Series, the DT-V21G11Z, is also driven by LED backlighting but does not sacrifice its highly accurate image quality. Its 1920x1080 non-glare IPS panel offers a 178-degree viewing angle and 1,000:1 contrast ratio. Other features include a 3G/dual-link HD-SDI input with embedded audio to monitor 1080p/60 signals (plus additional inputs), built-in vector scope and waveform monitor, 11 market functions, 16-channel audio level meter with multiple indicators, low latency circuitry, LTC and VITC time code support, and digital closed captioning.

Innovative new products are only part of the reason why ProHD has become the product line of choice for broadcasters. Through JVC's Broadcast Direct program, stations and groups work directly with JVC experts in transitioning their newsrooms to ProHD. Broadcast Direct customers also gain access to numerous support options through a dedicated broadcast portal on JVC's Web site, as well as special versions of ProHD products, including cameras with a special LoLux feature. Broadcast Direct customers routinely provide guidance and direction that influence ongoing JVC product development, ensuring that JVC will retain its leadership in the broadcast market.

As broadcasters continue to explore new business models and delivery platforms, it is more important than ever to keep pace with technology. Of course, budgets cannot be ignored. Broadcasters need performance, reliability, and value – and more and more stations are finding the solutions they need with JVC. We led the revolution against high-priced studio and ENG cameras, and JVC remains committed to delivering affordable technological innovation for the professional video marketplace.
