JVC DEVELOPS AND MARKETS 0.7-INCH D-ILA DEVICE WITH HIGHER RESOLUTION (SXGA+)

    Compact Device for High Definition Rear Projection Systems and Compact Projectors

Anaheim, CA (INFOCOMM, June 15-17, 2000) — Victor Company of Japan, Ltd. (JVC) has developed a new Direct-Drive Image Light Amplifier "D-ILA", a reflective liquid crystal device with SXGA+ (1400 x 1050) resolution. The device is the smallest in the industry and will expand JVC's line-up of D-ILA devices and grow its business in the display component market. The company will begin shipping samples in October of this year and plans to start mass-production and outside sale in January 2001.

The newly developed 0.7-inch D-ILA device is a compact version of JVC's 0.9-inch device, and offers increased resolution. The device employs a LCOS (Liquid Crystal on Silicon) structure that achieves both the high resolution and high aperture rates (brightness) that are the hallmarks of D-ILA. The new D-ILA device responds fully to an SXGA+ resolution which is becoming a new high resolution standard for PC displays. It is also an ideal device for smaller and lightweight projectors as well as rear projection sets or systems for home use.

JVC will market the new device to other manufacturers. It will also supply driving ICs (DPD; D-ILA Panel Drive IC), FAMs (Final AMP Module), and panel evaluation kits to support the development of projectors using D-ILA devices. The driving ICs, FAMs, and panel evaluation kits can be used with both the 0.9-inch and the 0.7-inch versions.

JVC will continue to sell the 0.9-inch D-ILA device as a high-brightness version.

Advantages of JVC's D-ILA Technology

(1) Reflective device with three-dimensionally aligned pixel addresses and liquid crystals achieves the industry's highest aperture ratio.

(2) Liquid crystal layers are aligned vertically to achieve high contrast and fast response.

(3) Higher density potential makes device more versatile than any other available, allowing higher resolutions for the same size and smaller sizes for the same resolution.

(4) High aperture ratio maximizes use of light and brightness.

The new device is on display at the JVC Booth at INFOCOMM.
