JVC DEVELOPS ULTRA HIGH RESOLUTION
D-ILATM DISPLAY DEVICE AT 2048 x 1536

QXGA Panel, highest resolution in the industry,
ideal for "e-cinema"

Anaheim, CA (INFOCOMM, June 15-17, 2000) -- Victor Company of Japan, Ltd. (JVC) has developed a new Direct-Drive Image Light Amplifier "D-ILA"; a reflective liquid crystal device with QXGA resolution. This device boasts the highest resolution of any matrix device in the world and therefore is perfectly suited for use in high-definition large screen projectors. The company plans to begin production of QXGA chips in April 2001.

In October 1997 JVC developed an SXGA (1.3 million pixels) D-ILA device and launched a projector incorporating it at the end of that year. It has been the only company in the world to continuously mass produce the liquid crystal on silicon (LCOS) devices for projectors on a commercial basis.

The new device maintains the features of previous D-ILA elements, but radically improves resolution to 3.15 million pixels (QXGA: 2048 x 1536). QXGA resolution is able to fully display the whole spectrum of high definition television, and is ideal for the ultimate needs of electronic cinema.

This QXGA device will be the key for JVC's development of its flagship D-ILA projectors, including the ones specifically designed for electronic cinema application. JVC is also pursuing alliance strategies with several industry-leading companies on the use of device, including an alliance with Eastman Kodak of the United States.

Advantages of JVC's D-ILA Technology

(1) Reflective device with three-dimensionally aligned pixel addresses and liquid crystals achieves the industry's highest aperture ratio.

Liquid crystal layers are aligned vertically to achieve high contrast and fast response.

(3) Higher density potential makes device more versatile than any other available, allowing higher resolutions for the same size and smaller sizes for the same resolution.

(4) High aperture ratio maximizes use of light and brightness.

The new device will be on display at the JVC Booth at INFOCOMM 2000.
