JVC ENTERS BROADCAST UPCONVERTER MARKET WITH TECHNOLOGY BREAKTHROUGH

Adaptive Motion Algorithm Provides "Convincing HDTV" Quality from Standard Definition Sources

Las Vegas, NV (NAB, April 10-13, 2000) -- JVC PROFESSIONAL PRODUCTS COMPANY announces a technological breakthrough that will allow material originally shot in various standard definition formats to be efficiently and cost effectively upconverted, achieving superior image quality that approaches high definition. This breakthrough Adaptive Motion Algorithm technology is featured in JVC’s BC-D2300 Upconverter, which will be unveiled at NAB 2000.

JVC’s BC-D2300 Upconverter extends the life of standard definition material, permitting the input of 480i video signals, to be output in either the 1080i or the 720P HDTV standard. But considering that when upconverting to HDTV, the higher the resolution of the original picture, the better the final picture quality-- it is especially practical for use with JVC’s high resolution 50 Mbps 4:2:2 D-9 products. JVC’s D-9 is engineered to preserve far more chroma resolution and with less artifacts than competing formats, thus making this combination the only high quality, economical solution for HDTV upconversion.

JVC’s BC-D2300 Upconverter offers a practical and affordable method of converting standard definition programming to 1080i or 720P picture formats. JVC's new upconverter uses a revolutionary new Adaptive Motion Algorithm which interpolates information to compensate for that lack of data, thereby producing smooth, high resolution moving objects. In contrast, when upconverting standard definition footage using conventional techniques, moving objects often take on a blurred or artifact-laden appearance as the recorded SDTV information lags behind the higher definition system’s ability to display that information

The BC-D2300 offers a SDI input and three HD-SDI outputs, both featuring embedded audio capability. The BC-D2300 has a built-in audio delay to keep the embedded audio in sync with the upconverted HDTV outputs for superior audio/visual impact. Automatic detection of the active input line-standard with manual override lets producers have more creative control. Other winning features of the BC-D2300 are JVC’s unique 2-Dimensional Enhancement, which produces sharper, crisper pictures and three aspect ratio conversion modes: 4:3, Letter-Box and Squeeze.

The BC-D2300 Upconverter is housed in a one rack unit-high chassis, for ease of installation in any studio or production environment.

The suggested list price for the BC-D2300 is $15,000.
