UCLA SELECTS JVC'S CINELINE EQUIPMENT FOR MASTERS PROGRAM
Four JVC Fellows to Produce Final Thesis Projects with JVC Camcorders and Studio Decks

WAYNE, NJ (December 20, 2001) - JVC PROFESSIONAL PRODUCTS COMPANY today announced that the UCLA School of Theater, Film and Television has selected its Professional DV CineLine Camcorders and Professional DV studio decks. The four UCLA students selected as JVC Fellows will use the high-end equipment to produce creative works during the current academic year.

The Fellows, Wayne Calvin Byrd II, Damienne Caron, Jerry Henry and Adam Martin, Master of Fine Arts candidates in UCLA's Department of Film, Television and Digital Media, are among the first users of CineLine electronic cinema camcorders in the United States. The JVC Fellows will utilize the CineLine equipment, chosen specifically for its creative power, including matte box, lens, viewfinder, batteries, shipping case and Professional DV studio deck to complete their 30-minute thesis productions. The student projects will be showcased in June at the UCLA Festival 2002.

The JVC alliance with UCLA will provide in-depth training for the Fellows on CineLine camcorders and technical assistance as well as provide services to up-convert the completed CineLine production to HDTV for screening purposes. Additionally, JVC will provide HDTV D-VHS copies for each MFA candidates' use.

The GY-DV700WUCL is JVC's top performing Professional DV CineLine camcorder. JVC engineers have worked closely with leading film directors and cinematographers to develop the ultimate digital camera for use by independent filmmakers. The CineLine models go far beyond simulating a "film look," empowering cinematographers with creative control over the picture mood. CineLine cameras are also specially designed to optimize the digital transfer to film, resulting in quality final prints unmatched by any DV camera.

"JVC will be working closely with UCLA's Fellows throughout 2002 in an effort to document their experiences and support them throughout the production process," said Lawrence Librach, assistant vice president, business development broadcast & entertainment of JVC. "We're looking forward to seeing the end product, and we're very proud that this select group of students from UCLA will be utilizing JVC's CineLine."

"It is very exciting to have the next generation of filmmakers using cutting-edge technology from an industry leader like JVC," said William McDonald, vice-chair for production at UCLA.

JVC Fellows

A native of Los Angeles, Wayne Calvin Byrd II graduated from UC Santa Barbara where he hailed as the most controversial student body president to ever be elected. Currently a Master of Fine Arts in Film Directing candidate at UCLA, Byrd's insistence on using his influence to forefront important social issues has carried over into his more recent role as filmmaker. His latest documentary, "A Night At The Marina," intimately explores the topic of the dehumanizing effects of police misconduct.

Damienne Caron, born and raised in France, earned her BA in Modern Culture and Media from Brown University and is currently completing a MFA in Directing at UCLA. Caron is prepared to shoot "Judge Koan," a film based on a TV judge who is famous for his wit and legal genius. The film is a philosophical courtroom drama/comedy, a Rashomon of Court TV. It focuses on human relationships caught between a Zen riddle and a legal battle.

After taking a year off from UCLA's MFA Directing Program to serve as Unit Director/Videographer on the upcoming PBS series "Senior Year," Jerry Henry went on to work for Mel Stuart as a unit director/videographer on "Voices," a poignant look at African Americans and their roles in the family structure, their communities and society. Currently, he is preparing to shoot his MFA thesis that will explore the realms of digital filmmaking and digital special effects.

Adam Martin, raised predominantly in New York with his mother, but also across the rest of the U.S. with his hitch-hiking, free-spirited father, graduated with a BFA double major in Art Design and Film Production from The University of North Carolina at Greensboro. Adam is currently in his thesis year of study in UCLA's MFA Directing Program where he is completing two short projects, "In a Boy's Pocket," and "Syllables," and is also prepping to shoot his multi-part thesis, which will include a combination of narrative and commercial projects.
