CALIFORNIA'S KFTL BUYS $120,000 OF D-9 EQUIPMENT Independent Station Lauds Quality, Cost of Robust Format Wayne, New Jersey (December 3, 1998) -- KFTL, an independent station that broadcasts to over 3 million households in the greater Oakland, CA area, has selected JVC'S D-9 with 4:2:2 sampling and mild 3.3:1 compression for in-house production and on-air video playback. In operation since 1987, KFTL broadcasts eclectic programming for its Northern California viewers including religious and foreign language programs, sporting events, and "shop at home" shows during the evening hours. Last year, KFTL celebrated its 10-year broadcast anniversary, a milestone that prompted station owner, Family Stations Incorporated of Oakland, to upgrade the facility. "It was simply time to make a change," said KFTL Station Manager Matt Tuter. "For the past few years we've been looking at several digital formats quite intently, and in terms of cost and quality, the JVC D-9 machines were without a doubt our best option." "We felt it was important for our organization to look ahead towards the future of digital broadcasting," Tuter explained. "In particular, we liked the fact that JVC's D-9 machines are already 16 x 9 capable and equipped to handle the future demands of DTV." KFTL recently took shipment of its new D-9 equipment -- a total of seven BR-D51 Players, three BR-D80 Editing Recorders, and one DY-700 Camcorder. KFTL will use one editor and two players to upgrade its A/B roll system; another player and editor will be used in the multi-format edit suite with other video equipment; one editor will be a reserve machine in the station's master control; and ultimately, four players will be used for on-air playback. The camcorder will be used for normal field production. Tuter announced his confidence that D-9 will prove to be a great performer for KFTL, largely because the station has already gotten a glimpse into how well the equipment works. "Atomic Productions, a production company owned by KFTL's production manager, rents office space in our studios," Tuter explained. "They have D-9 editors and camcorders, so we've seen the equipment firsthand for a while now, and we know they are incredibly happy with the product. We expect to achieve that same level of satisfaction with our D-9 machines."
