JVC INTRODUCES NEW MPEG-4 CODEC
The DM-NC40U makes it possible for any company to easily and cost-effectively set up a real-time communication system

WAYNE, NJ (February 5, 2003) - JVC PROFESSIONAL PRODUCTS COMPANY today announced the DM-NC40U codec that uses MPEG-4 technology to create an easy way to send video and audio over IP (LAN, WAN and Internet).

As part of an ongoing trend to find more flexible, affordable ways to hold remote meetings, conduct distance learning and teleconferences, and perform surveillance companies are looking to migrate from the cumbersome and limited method of distributing video over coaxial cable to the flexible method of distributing video over IP.

JVC has responded with the DM-NC40U, a stand-alone appliance that plugs directly into an IP connection to establish a real-time communication system.

An ideal solution for video and audio Internet delivery, the DM-NC40U unit delivers an ISMA Compliant MPEG-4 stream, and provides AAC LC audio.  This means the stream makes an efficient use of bandwidth and can be played by all popular media players (QuickTime, Real Media and Windows Media), so no special additional software is needed. A variable bitrate allows the user to adjust picture quality and bandwidth requirement.  And unicast and multicast capabilities make it possible to create content that can be distributed to one or many.

Because it has the ability to send and receive at the same time, two units can be used—one on each end—to create a teleconferencing system with an incredibly short delay (less than 300ms).  Video and audio are delivered via BNC for display in a standard video monitor.  Picture-in-picture capability allows viewing both feeds in each screen.

For remote surveillance applications, the DM-NC40U has a transparent RS-232/485 allowing for remote control operation of pan and tilt or other devices.  And because the images stream right to one, or multiple, PCs, there’s no need for additional, dedicated monitors to deliver the feed.

Best of all, because it’s an appliance, it does not need time to boot-up, and is so simple to operate, even novices can have it sending or receiving in no time.

"The DM-NC40U truly demonstrates the advantages and possibilities of communicating over the Internet," states Juan Martinez, product marketing manager for JVC PROFESSIONAL PRODUCTS COMPANY.  “By leveraging the new MPEG-4 standard in what is essentially a plug-and-play device, the DM-NC40U makes it possible for companies of any size to have a dynamic Internet communication experience with team members located down the street, across town, or on the other side of the country.”
