SINCLAIR BROADCAST GROUP ADDS
JVC PROHD CAMERAS AT SIX STATIONS

IWAYNE, NJ (April 8, 2013) – JVC Professional Products Company, a division of JVC Americas Corp., today announced that Sinclair Broadcast Group has ordered 25 JVC GY-HM790 ProHD shoulder-mount ENG cameras and nine GY-HM650 ProHD mobile news cameras, which will be distributed across six stations for local news and commercial production. The cameras will be primarily used to expand ENG camera fleets at the stations.

One of the largest U.S. television broadcasters, Sinclair’s television stations reach almost 30 percent of the U.S. television households. After pending transactions, Sinclair owns and operates, programs, or provides sales services to 112 stations in 61 markets, including 26 stations that produce news. Most of its new GY-HM790s are being deployed at WRGB serving Albany-Schenectady-Troy, N.Y. (DMA #58), WTVC in Chattanooga, Tenn. (DMA #87), and WKRC in Cincinnati, Ohio (DMA #35). WLFL in Raleigh-Durham, N.C. (DMA #24) will receive two cameras for commercial production. The new GY-HM650s will be assigned to multimedia journalists at WRGB, WTVC, WHP serving Harrisburg-Lancaster-Lebanon-York, Penn. (DMA #43), and WHAM in Rochester N.Y. (DMA #78).

Designed for mobile news production, the handheld GY-HM650 features three, 12-bit CMOS sensors and a built-in Fujinon wide angle 23x zoom lens with auto-focus, optical image stabilizer, and manual controls. “We use multimedia journalists and we’re putting smaller cameras in our news operations for them,” said Don Roberts, director of television systems, Sinclair Broadcast Group. “The 650 is small enough that one person can operate it easily while they’re on the run.”

Beyond its form factor and image quality, the GY-HM650s advanced features were also an important selling point for Sinclair. With a small Verizon 4G LTE modem connected to the back of the camera via USB, the GY-HM650’s unique dual codec technology allows shooters to transmit live HD video back to the studio while continuing to record footage. The camera is also able to transfer recorded clips to a remote server via built in FTP.

“That is really what made us start looking at the JVC cameras,” Roberts added. “It has the potential to change the workflow for our multimedia journalists, how they gather news and send it back.”

With its three, 1/3-inch progressive scan CCDs, the GY-HM790 produces 1280x720 and 1920x1080 images, and its proprietary MPEG-2 encoder supports 1080i, 720p, and SD (480i) for operations that have not yet made the move to HD. The compact, shoulder-mount camera is an outstanding choice for ENG, with a dual card slot design that records to low-cost, non-proprietary SDHC media cards in ready-to-edit file formats for Apple Final Cut Pro (.MOV) and other major NLE systems (.MP4).

JVC will demonstrate the GY-HM650’s new live transmission capabilities, as well as provide hands-on demonstrations of the GY-HM790 and other ProHD cameras, at the 2013 NAB Show (Booth C4314), which runs April 8-11 in Las Vegas, NV
