JVC'S EDIT-DESK SYSTEM INTRODUCES "VIDEO HOMEWORK"

In education, "hands-on" experience and repetition are the keys to lasting, deep-rooted knowledge. Until recently, however, many college and high school television and video departments with limited budgets often lacked the facilities and resources to provide multiple students with this essential "hands-on" application. As a solution for a significant number of educational users who can't afford higher-end video editing equipment, but require professional quality to properly train their students, JVC introduced the Edit-Desk System. The system incorporates some of JVC's high end technology, while addressing the needs of educational institutions by offering additional benefits that "prosumer" decks can never approach. One of these benefits is the concept of "video homework." With the introduction of JVC's exclusive CTL Time Code, the concept of "video homework" emerged. Students now have the ability to plan their edits independently of the editing suite, giving them the opportunity to spend more time in perfecting the art of video editing. CTL Time Code records absolute tape address information on the control track, and provides fast and precise access to any frame on the videotape (as opposed to conventional control track counters that lose reference when the tape is removed from the machine). "By simply putting a visible time code on a standard VHS copy of the master, students are able to log the raw footage and plan their edits in their home or dorm room using a standard VHS video cassette player. This feature alone is worth purchasing the system," said Rich Oxley, a telecommunications specialist with North High School in North St. Paul, MN.

CTL Time Code can be added onto an existing recorded tape using the Post Stripe mode, which means no special time code equipment is required when recording in the field. Also, adding CTL Time Code does not require giving up an audio track. Time code can be displayed on the Edit-Desk System's LED counters, superimposed over the picture or output to serial editing controllers. Another common problem schools face is the "hogging" of editing suites by students. With video homework, students have more time to creatively and strategically plan their edits, thus making the editing suites available for use by a greater number of students. When editing decisions are finished, students can then enter the edit location numerically, making the editing process faster and more efficient. The Edit-Desk System is loaded with professional-level features that simplify the editing process. With two linear audio channels instead of one, audio editing is a cinch. Narration, music, or background sound can be added or deleted without disturbing the main audio track. The search button on the editing controller used along with play and pause buttons, enables the student to edit on audio cues rather than simply on visuals. Students can plan an edit at the beginning, end, or even between syllables of a word. Most importantly, the Edit-Desk System is a good investment. Realizing that for many, it would be a "starter" system to build on, the Edit-Desk was designed with an "open-ended" architecture approach with plug-in expansion boards. The flexibility of this system is unmatched in lower-priced editing systems. The JVC Edit-Desk System consists of the BR-S800U editing recorder, BR-S500U player and RM-G800U editing controller. Fast and precise time-code editing will be available for the first time in an editing system this affordable. The complete system has a suggested list price of $7,700. A full-featured editing recorder, the BR-S800 offers a durable tape drive and built-in CTL time-code for fast and precise access to any frame. Its companion edit feeder, the BR-S500 incorporates the same smart features, forming the most economical, high- performance professional S-VHS editing system available today. With over 400 lines of horizontal resolution, digital Y/C separator and a three-line cross-talk cancellation, the BR-S800 and BR-S500 produce high quality images even after dubbing multiple generations. The RM-G800U controller has two GPI connectors on the rear panel in which you can connect audio mixers, switches, digital effects generators - even a Video Toaster. This system also allows for a simple, yet effective A/B editing system with certain "b- roll" VCR's. "The JVC Edit-Desk System offers videographers in the education field a complete, flexible and user-friendly professional editing system," said David Walton, JVC communications marketing manager. "It gives educators the opportunity to teach more students and produce more quality video programs at a lower cost than ever before."
