The microprocesser based ABNER A/B roll editing controller offers simplicity, ease of operation, and ruggedness while providing outstanding performance and features in a variety of editing configurations. Designed as an entry level A/B controller, ABNER extends the simple, straight-forward philosophy of the RM-86U/RM-440 type controller to the world of A/B editing. Fully-equipped with SMPTE time-code readers, the ABNER A/B roll editing controller is priced competitively with other 2-machine controllers. It is the perfect upgrade for 1/2-inch and 3/4-inch users desiring to move into A/B editing.

Ease of operation

The ABNER utilizes separate dial search and tape transport controls for each of the three VCRs connected. Operation is very similiar to standard two machine controllers. The tapes are shuttled to the desired edit points. Edit locations are then entered either manually, or by pressing the REHEARSE or PERFORM buttons. ABNER then performs the edit, rolling each of the source decks at the proper time, and triggering an external switcher (not included) for the desired transition effect, such as a dissolve. Users accustomed to two machine editing will find ABNER the fastest and easiest way to step up to A/B roll editing. First time editors will find ABNER almost as easy to learn as a cuts-only type controller.

Time code readers built-in

The use of SMPTE time code on the VCR's address channel permits frame accurate editing, and repeatable access to any location on the video tape since each individual frame has a unique identifying number associated with it. The ABNER-TC, ABNER-RC, ABNER-TCX, and ABNER-RCX controllers are equipped with time code readers for each VCR, which display the time code locations on the CRT status display, as well as in the edit list. This is much more convenient than using a tape timer (control track) reference, since the latter is usually inaccurate and is lost when the tape is removed from the machine. Of course, the SMPTE time code readers can be switched out if control track editing is desired.

The ABNER-R and ABNER-T controllers (without time code) can be upgraded to time code with the addition of the optional TCR-U time code board.

Multi-event memory storage

Pertinent data for each edit are automatically stored in a 20 event memory buffer as the edits are performed. Any of these edits can be recalled and reperformed with modifications if desired. The entire buffer can be output through the RS-232C serial port, to a printer, or to an edit list management system. Edits can be output one at a time or all at once. The ABNER-TCX and ABNER-RCX output the edit decision list in the CMX format. Other ABNER models output the list in the Paltex format.

CRT Status Display Output

By connecting an inexpensive monochrome computer monitor (not supplied), the user is given a screen full of information regarding the current edit. This information includes edit number and type, in/out times, duration, program length, and so on. By pressing the "memory" button, the user can instantly recall the previous edit and make corrections if desired. The unique "Executive" mode provides the user with a menu-driven method of changing various controller parameters. This makes ABNER much easier to learn than most other editing controllers.

Another feature of the status display is system diagnostics. By pressing the "DIAG" button, the display instantly shows a listing of all of the controller's functions, along with an 8 bit binary code associated with each. This makes it easy to determine where a specific problem exists, and expedites the troubleshooting procedure.

VTR interface & cables

Connection cables are available for most popular 3/4" & VHS VCRs. A unique feature of the ABNER is in the way the VTR interface is designed. Interface protocol is built into the system which supports the following models:

JVC: CR-850U, CR-8250U, CR-6650U, CP-5550U, CR-8200U, CR-6600U, CP-5500U, BR-8600U, BR-6400U, BP-5300U

Sony: Type-5 series, BVU series, SLO-383, BVW-10/40

Panasonic: NV-8500, NV-9600, NV-9240, AU-700, AU-300

By simply attaching the appropriate cable, the controller can be used with any of the above VCRs. No expensive software change is required.

Automatic animation mode

Animation from either a camera or VTR source is possible. ABNER will perform sequential edits automatically in the animation mode with user-defined parameters. Each edit is numbered and output to the list as the edit is performed.

Auto/manual GPI trigger pulse

A GPI (General Purpose Interface) is provided for triggering an external device such as a switcher, special effects generator, or audio deck. Any device which accepts a contact closure can be triggered with the ABNER. The GPI trigger location (relative to the RECORD tape time) is always displayed on the status display. This makes the ABNER suitable for use with a wide variety of switchers and digital effects units.

Automatic split audio/video edits

A split edit is one in which the audio and video entries occur at different locations. ABNER allows the user to enter a "SPLIT EDIT POINT" at which the second portion of the edit (either audio after video, or video after audio) will take place.

Rack mount or table top configuration

ABNER editing controllers are available in one of two configurations:

Table top model. This version is housed in an attractive cabinet which is hinged to open for easy access to internal components. Dimensions are 18" (W) x 3.80" (H) x 16.4" (D).

Rack mount version. Designed to drop neatly into a standard EIA rack, this version has the power and time code on/off switches under a hinged cover on the control panel. No additional rack mounting hardware is necessary. Dimensions are 19" (W) x 5" (H) x 12.25" (D).
