There are essentially three major world TV standards, none of which are compatible with the others. These standards are known as PAL, SECAM, and NTSC and they were adopted for a variety of reasons, none of which seem to make any sense anymore. The end result has been a major inconvenience for the manufacturers of TV and video equipment, to say nothing of the business and industrial community which is trying to increase its use of video as a world wide communications medium. To meet the needs of international video users JVC has introduced the BR-6400TR. RECORDING

The BR-6400TR is designed to record in either the PAL or SECAM standards. Let's explain that a little further. It will take a PAL or SECAM signal, and make a PAL or SECAM recording of it. It will not convert any one standard to any other standard. To get a PAL signal, you would have to have a PAL camera, or another source (like another multi-standard VCR). It will not take a standard American (NTSC) signal and make a PAL tape of it. The main thing to remember is that you have to start with a PAL or SECAM source to be able to use the recording capabilities of this machine. PLAYBACK

The BR-6400TR features triple-system playback. That is, it can play back tapes recorded in either the PAL, SECAM, or NTSC standards. But, once again, there's a catch! Since the deck doesn't convert one standard to another, the signal coming out through the video output when a SECAM tape is playing, is a SECAM signal. You can view this signal IF you have a SECAM monitor. What about good ole NTSC?

The NTSC system uses two different color encoding frequencies, depending upon what part of the world you're in. The one we use in the United States is 3.58MHz. The BR-6400TR plays back NTSC tapes and outputs them in the 4.43MHz encoded format. If you have an NTSC 4.43MHz monitor (most in the U.S. are not) then you can watch NTSC tapes. GOOD NEWS!!

When used with the JVC TM-14PSN four standard monitor, you can play back just about all VHS tapes, regardless of what system they're recorded in, since the TM-14PSN accepts PAL, SECAM, NTSC 4.43MHz and NTSC 3.58MHz signals. It will even play back tapes recorded on ordinary NTSC U.S. standard VCR's. If you don't believe it, try it! Take a VHS tape from your home collection (SP speed, please) and play it back on the BR-6400TR with the TM-14PSN in the "4.43" position. Normal color. If you watch it in the 3.58 position, you get B & W. (Ordinary NTSC video players will use the 3.58 position for color and the 4.43 for B & W). ADDITIONAL FEATURES

The BR-6400TR has most of the same advanced features of the BR-6400U.
