JVC INTRODUCES NEW LIGHTWEIGHT HIGH-PERFORMANCE D-9 CAMCORDER

DY-70 is Industry’s Most Affordable ½-inch 50Mbps 4:2:2 Acquisition

Las Vegas, NV (NAB, April 10-13, 2000) -- JVC PROFESSIONAL PRODUCTS COMPANY is introducing the DY-70, an extraordinary new lightweight and high performance D-9 camcorder that combines the advantage of JVC’s 14bit DSP camera technology with an all-digital 4:2:2 camcorder at the most affordable price ever. JVC is heralding the introduction of the DY-70 as signifying a radical shift to the industry’s cost/performance paradigm, as this is the lowest price ever for 50Mbps acquisition.

The DY-70 utilizes three newly-developed 380,000 pixel ½-inch IT CCDs with microlens technology to achieve superior sensitivity and resolution. By incorporating JVC’s microlens technology, a sensitivity of F11 at 2000 lux is achieved. This is equivalent to the sensitivity achieved by many

2/3-inch CCD cameras. These new high performance CCDs also virtually eliminate smear dramatically with 125db suppression. Minimum illumination is 0.75 lux, at F1.4.

The DY-70 is a lightweight unit, extremely suitable for ENG applications. Total weight of the DY-70 including VF-P115 view finder, lens, battery and tape is 15 pounds (approximately 6.8 Kg). Power consumption is 26W. In addition, the camera provides superior ergonomics. The layout of switches is same as high-end digital camcorders, for comfort and easy operation.

The three position filter wheel, 3200K, 5600K+1/8ND and 5600K + 1/64ND, is combined with full manual access to all camera features, providing full creative possibilities. Automatic functions, including auto-white tracking and automatic video level control, are available at the flip of a switch, providing the camera operator with more flexibility to shoot under virtually any lighting conditions

The camera portion also provides full gen-lock function for multiple camera operation. JVC’s DY-70 employs 14bit DSP and its dynamic range is more than 600%.

The VTR portion is equipped with the JVC’s proven 50 Mbps ½ -inch component digital D-9 format, widely acclaimed as the high-quality format choice because of its high-resolution 4:2:2 digital signal processing and 50 Mbps data rate in an "I frame only" perceptually lossless 3.3:1 compression. Independent tests have found the quality of D-9 identical to Digital Betacam and superior to the 50 Mbps MPEG-II compression scheme used by IMX. The DY-70 records four 16-bit, 48 kHz PCM audio channels with a dynamic range of more than 80 dB.

"JVC led the world and was the first to market a 4:2:2 50 Mbps format. Now D-9 has the largest installed base of 50 Mbps VTRs in the world," noted Juan Martinez, Manager of Recording Products for JVC’s Digital Broadcast Systems Division. "Taking advantage of its superior experience in 50 Mbps technology, JVC continues to grow the D-9 product line, developing the products that our customers need to perform high quality production tasks. The DY-70 camcorder is a prime example of JVC’s commitment to providing top-of-the-line products at affordable prices to our customers."

Bob Mueller, Executive Vice President of JVC PROFESSIONAL PRODUCTS COMPANY said, "JVC is at the helm of the digital revolution this NAB, with D-9 products that literally redefine the standards of digital performance and value. Specifically, D-9’s low initial cost, combined with its exceptionally robust transport system and long service intervals allow JVC to establish a whole new gauge for professional digital acquisition and editing."

The suggested retail price for the DY-70 is $12,000 not including the lens.
