The BR-S411U is JVC's second generation S-VHS portable recorder. It embodies the very latest in recording technology developed by the company that invented S-VHS--JVC. A number of new circuits have been developed which dramatically improve the S-VHS picture quality. These circuits have been incorporated in the BR-S411U. Additionally, features not found on our earlier model such as high-speed search, VITC time code capability, XLR audio, and flying erase heads have been added, making the BR-S411U the best performing and most versatile portable recorder you can buy.

S-VHS RECORDING AND PLAYBACK TECHNOLOGY

With a carrier frequency that extends up to 7 MHz and horizontal resolution exceeding 400 lines, S-VHS has proved itself a format truly capable of meeting professional needs. Pictures are sharp and clear, colors vibrant and alive. Advanced video processing circuits including a sophisticated 2-line Adaptive Comb Filter ensure superb basic performance and the best possible overall picture quality.

VITC (VERTICAL INTERVAL TIME CODE) RECORDING CAPABILITY

As a portable recorder designed explicitly for professional use, the BR-S411U features VITC time code recording capability. Invaluable in editing and post-production, pre-recorded time code can save time and simplify post-production tasks. A compact time code generator (SA-R100U) can be conveniently attached either to the rear or bottom of the BR-S411U. The time code is added to the S-VIDEO signal, and is recorded at vertical intervals so that the audio tracks are not affected.

HI-FI VHS STEREO SOUND

Superior sound quality is just as essential as excellent video. That's why the BR-S411U features JVC's advanced Hi-Fi VHS stereo sound system. Using two rotary FM-audio heads to record the Hi-Fi audio signals on a separate layer of tape beneath the video track, Hi-Fi VHS provides superb stereo sound with a dynamic range of more than 80 dB, and extended frequency response of 20 Hz to 20 kHz. A Hi-Fi REC switch is provided to defeat sound recording on the Hi-Fi track. The normal audio track is also stereo and features Dolby* noise reduction for improved sound quality. Audio dubbing is possible with the normal audio channel-2 soundtrack.

PROFESSIONAL-STANDARD XLR BALANCED AUDIO CONNECTORS

To ensure the highest levels of sound quality both in reception and transmission, the BR-S411U features a complete set of professional- standard XLR balanced audio connectors. To provide the flexibility demanded of a professional recorder, both input and output are independent for all four channels. Output levels can be selected from +4 dB, 0 dB, and -6 dB, and input can be selected from -20 or -6 dB.

MANUAL AUDIO LEVEL METERS AND CONTROLS

Featuring large, independent VU audio level meters for channels 1 and 2, together with four audio recording level controls, the BR- S411U permits easy monitoring of either the Hi-Fi or normal audio tracks, as well as separate adjustment of recording levels for Hi- Fi and normal audio tracks on channels 1 and 2. A three-position switch allows monitoring of the sound from each channel individually or from both together. For added convenience, a switchable audio limiting circuit is provided. Levels can still be controlled manually even when the limiter circuit is switched on.

ROTARY ERASE HEADS FOR DISTORTION-FREE EDITS

To ensure clean, professional-quality recordings, the BR-S411U incorporates two rotary erase heads on the head drum and blanking switcher. During re-recording, these heads scan the video tracks before they reach the recording heads and erase the exact portions of the track which are to be re-recorded. This prevent chroma beats and ensures glitch-free edits.

AEF (AUTOMATIC EDITING FUNCTION)

The BR-S411U's built-in AEF mechanism for automatic backspace editing ensures that new recordings begin precisely at the end of the last frame whenever recording is restarted from the Pause mode. Incorporating a microprocessor which reads modified control pulses, this system prevents frame overlap, ensuring smooth, distortion- free transitions.

VHS MODE OPERATION

As an added convenience, the BR-S411U can also be operated in the VHS mode (SP only). HQ picture-improvement circuits are incorporated to ensure the best possible picture quality in VHS recording and playback.

SHUTTLE SEARCH AND FRAME ADVANCE

For more search flexibility in the field or in th studio, Shuttle Search at 7 times normal speed is provided. Frame advance is also possible with the PAUSE/STILL button.

LCD TAPE COUNTER SWITCHABLE TO LAP TIMER

The LCD digital display can be switched from a 4-digit tape counter to a 5-digit lap timer showing the elapsed tape time in hours, minutes and seconds.

LONG PAUSE WHILE PROTECTING TAPE

A microprocessor-controlled Long Pause mechanism feeds the tape slightly each time the pause time exceeds a certain limit. This permits the recorder to remain in the Record-Pause mode for up to 11 minutes, giving you more time between takes to prepare for the next shot.

WIRED REMOTE CONTROL

This convenient wired remote control duplicates all of the recorder's tape controls (PAUSE, REC, REW, FF, AUDIO DUB, PLAY, STOP), permitting remote operation from any angle for greater operational flexibility both on location and in the studio.

AS A CAMCORDER OR PORTABLE

To form a compact and extremely mobile camcorder that retains all the advanced professional features of the BR-S411U, dock it directly with any of JVC's KY-15, KY-17, KY-20, and KY-25 3-CCD cameras with Y/C separate signal output, or the BY-10 single-CCD camera with Y/C separate signal output. You'll also be able to use it as a separate portable recorder in combination with any existing camera thanks to the provided interface adapter.

EDITING FEEDER

In addition to its top-of-the-line portable recording capabilities, the BR-S411U can be used as a feeder in a high-quality editing system. As well as its versatile 50-pin connector, this advanced recorder features both composite and separate Y/C input/output connectors so it can be used in conjunction not only with an S-VHS editing recorder, but also with a current VHS, 3/4-inch U-VCR, or MII editing recorder. To form a complete cost-effective editing suite, use the optional RM-G410U editing controller, specifically designed for use with JVC's portable S-VHS recorders and any 45-pin compatible editing recorder.

INPUT SWITCHING BETWEEN CAMERA/LINE/Y/C

The BR-S411U is equipped with two INPUT SELECT switches--one for CAMERA/LINE selection, the other for COMPOSITE/Y/C selection. There's also a three-position CAMERA SELECT switch so 14-pin cameras with high or low microphone output level can be connected.

RELIABILITY

COMPREHENSIVE WARNING SYSTEM

To ensure trouble-free operation and minimize downtime, problems such as servo lock failure, tape end, depleted battery, and automatic shut-off due to condensation are indicated by LEDs. As an added precaution, an audible warning signal is simultaneously output from the earphone jack. When the BR-S411U is combined with a JVC direct-docking camera, the same information is displayed on the camera's viewfinder screen.

RUGGED CONSTRUCTION

Charges four NB-G1U battery packs either simultaneously (NORMAL CHARGE mode) or in sequence (QUICK CHARGE mode). Charging time is about ten hours for four batteries in the NORMAL CHARGE mode and about 90 minutes per battery in the QUICK CHARGE mode.
