Q: I need to download drivers. Where can I get them?
A: We do not have any standalone drivers that you can download. All our drives require software in order for them to be properly read and written to. You should have received this software along with your drive. If you did not receive such software, please contact your local reseller. Currently, we ship all our drives with Adaptec’s Easy CD-Creator for PCs, and Toast for Macs. You can also purchase those in most retail computer stores or online at http://www.adaptec.com.

We also highly recommend updating your ASPI layer, which is an Adaptec-developed specification for sending commands to your host adapter. You can find these updates at Adaptec’s web site as well.

Q: I have a JVC XR-W2020 (or 2022 or 2626) and I upgraded the firmware to 2.05. Now my CD-R does not eject and/or when I access my drive I get an error message saying “Drive not ready”.
A: Your drive’s firmware update was not successful. In the firmware .zip file you should see a file called vcdrfupd.ini. Open it with NOTEPAD (START Button/PROGRAMS/ACCESSORIES) and under the line:

3=SAF,CD-R2006PLUS,4,1,1997/4/1

enter this line:

4=JVC,XR-W2020,4

Q: I just bought a JVC-2040 ReWritable and after successfully writing a CD with the CD media that came with the drive, I can’t seem to read it from any other computer or my audio CD Player. Why?
A: The CD that came with your ReWritable CD-R is CD-RW (re-writable.) There are 2 main types of CD recordable media, CD-R and CD-RW. CD-R is WORM (Write Once Read Many) media, therefor anything you write to the CD is permanent. CD-RW on the other hand is re-writable media and may be written to numerous times. Certain CD-ROMs and CD Players are still not calibrated to read CD-RW media as of yet. If you wish to have read capability on most CD players and CD-ROMs, use CD-R media.

Q: Is Adaptec DirectCD compatible with my drive?
A: As of now, Adaptec’s Direct CD does not support any JVC drive.

Q: I’m getting something called a &ldquo:Servo Tracking Error.” What do I do?
A: Here are a few things you can do:
  1. Try cleaning the drive. Power down the system and carefully open the tray door manually. Then, using a can of compressed air, spray into the open slot in a left-to-right sweeping motion. Afterwards, clean the read/write lens using a commercial CD lens cleaner.
  2. Make sure the drive gets plenty of air circulation. This is also related to dust buildup, as dust helps the drive retain heat. Make sure the power supply and cooling fans in your system are functioning and free of debris that may impede the flow of air into the system. Also, if an internal drive is sandwiched between other components (i.e. hard drives, other CD-ROM drives, etc), then it can be difficult for the drive to cool due to the lack of exposed surface area. Try to isolate the drive in a bay where nothing is directly underneath or on top of it.
If item 1 or 2 did not resolve your issue, make a support request at: http://pro.jvc.com/prof/support/emailsupport.jsp

Q: My system is reporting a buffer underrun. How can I prevent these errors from occurring?
A: When the buffer, or the memory, on the CD-R drive is empty, the steady stream of data required to write to the CD is interrupted. This results in a “buffer underrun” error, and loss of the CD. The way to avoid these errors is to make sure there is a healthy transfer rate from the source to the CD-R. There are a couple of ways to insure this:
  1. Defragment the drive that contains the data you are trying to write to the CD-R. This prevents the read/write heads from jumping around unnecessarily and wasting time trying to look for data.
  2. Record at lower speeds. Recording at lower speeds gives the buffer more time to refill, reducing the chance of a buffer underrun.
  3. Record from an image file off the hard disk.
  4. Move the image file you wish to burn from an EIDE hard disk to a SCSI hard disk. This allows the drive and the hard disk to communicate directly through the host adapter and not through the PCI bus, which is slower and takes up more system resources.
  5. When recording, make sure no other applications are running to prevent hard disk usage.

Q: What versions of Archiver or RomMaker support NT 4.0?
A: For Archiver, versions 4.10 and above support NT 4.0. For RomMaker versions 4.12a and above support NT 4.0

Q: Are your drives Y2K compliant?
A: Yes they are.

Q: Do you have to use the SCSI card that came with the drive?
A: No. Most cards that are 100% ASPI compliant will work with our drives. However, we recommend using Adaptec SCSI host adapters as this is the brand of adapter that we ship with all our systems, and they are known to be fully compatible with our drives.

Q: What brand of media do you recommend?
A: There are many different brands of media on the market, and while we do suggest using TDK media, there are other concerns. The different colors on the data surface of CD-R media (green, blue, silver, and gold) have different reflective/refractive properties. In combination with the low-tolerance nature of the CD-R/RW drive itself, such differences can affect the readability of a particular disc in different CD-ROM players and readers. For our CD-R drives, the green dye seems to perform most consistently. For CD-RW media, the blue discs are what we currently ship with our drives.

Q: Is there an update to my software and how can I get it?
A: If you are still under warranty, you are eligible for a free update. However, if your warranty has expired then you must purchase the updates.

If you are running a PC with Windows 95/98 or NT 4.0, or a Mac running OS 7.x or 8.x, we recommend upgrading to Adaptec’s Easy CD-Creator for PC’s, and Toast for Macs. You can purchase them in most retail computer stores or online at http://www.adaptec.com.

Q: Will an Ultra or Wide SCSI card make my CD-R record faster?
A: No. Unless you have other SCSI devices that are enhanced by these features, you will not need these cards.

Q: What’s the difference between an XR-W2020, 2022, 2626?
A: All three drives designations represent the same model. Some of the 2022s are OEM drives. After the firmware update, the drive will show up as a 2626.

Q: I use the Easy CD Creator software that was packaged with my JVC drive, but it didn’t come with any documentation. How do I print the online manuals?
A: Assuming Z: is the CD-ROM/CD-R drive that the Easy CD Creator installation disk is loaded, MANUAL.PS is the file you wish to print, and your printer is connected to LPT1:
  1. Go to the “DOS prompt” or the “Command Prompt.”
  2. Type: copy Z:\doc\MANUAL.PS lpt1 /b
  3. Press [Enter]

Q: I just upgraded to Windows 98, and every time I try to write or put in a blank CD, my system hangs or my SCSI devices all reset.  Why?
A: Windows 98 tries to read the contents of a blank CD when entered.  Sometimes this results in a SCSI bus reset, a blue screen, or a T7003 or T7004 error in Easy CD Creator.  To remedy this problem follow these directions:

  • Check your settings in device manager. You can do this by right clicking on MY COMPUTER, then click on PROPERTIES.
  • Clickon the tab Device Manager and open the CD-ROM tree. You should see your CD-R unit there.
  • Double-click on it and a dialogue box with information on the drive should appear.
  • If you click on the SETTINGS tab, you should see the options box. Make sure the ONLY box checked is ‘DISCONNECT’.

Q: I’ve updated to Windows 95B/Windows 98 on my computer and Archiver doesn’t work anymore. I have even tried uninstalling and reinstalling Archiver. What’s wrong?
A: Check your version of Archiver. If it is version 4.03 or earlier, it isn’t supported by 95B or 98, or more specifically, FAT32. If the CD-R packaged was purchased direct from JVC within the past year the software can be upgraded to a version that is FAT32-compatible. If the drive was not purchased direct (i.e. an OEM package or a second-hand drive), please do not contact us for software upgrades or replacements. The OEM is responsible for the software that they package with their CD-R systems, even if they use our drives. In the case that the drive is out of warranty and you are no longer eligible for a software upgrade, we suggest purchasing Adaptec Easy CD Creator.
